"respect
the beach" education program
Respect the Beach is an award-winning coastal educational program that can include field trips, classroom lectures, handouts, videos, and hands-on projects. The program focusses on coastal watershed processes, shoreline ecology and coastal areas stewardship to K-12 students and community groups. The Respect the Beach program is brought into classrooms by Surfrider members, who represent ocean environmentalism from the surfer's perspective, and who are role models that students can relate to.
Teachers
Typically, every year there is an Ocean's Week at schools. We encourage teachers to incorporate our materials with additional teaching, as well as a related beach cleanup to provide a complete view of ocean-related issues. Many of our units meet California State Content Standards.
Volunteers
The San Francisco Chapter works with a variety of groups, including schools and educators. We're looking for people to spread coastal conservation messages through local schools, through our national Respect the Beach education program.
If you want to help get our message out to students and can go into classrooms during the school day, this fun program is for you!
