"future sea levels" taping project
The San Francisco SR Chapter partnered with FutureSeaLevel.org over the
weekend of Feb 1-3 to create a "Street Art" installment which marked the
expected future rising height of the sea level, caused by the effects of
global warming. This event also supported our sponsorship of the amazing
ocean-minded stories (like "Sliding Liberia") being showcased at the 5th
Annual-San Francisco Ocean Film Festival, being
held that weekend at the Fort Mason Center.
Over that (super rainy) weekend, we marked the estimated sea level rise
(about 1 meter by the end of the century) on the walls of participating
merchants, mainly in the Sunset district where waves of Ocean Beach are
the dominant landscape. This historic surfing neighborhood where Jack
O'Neil opened the world's first "surf shop", was chosen because it would
likely be the first to feel the negative impacts of higher sea levels.

rising sea levels visit www.futuresealevel.org

surfing-based climate impact that you can't reduce - visit the

Special thanks to our volunteers like Sarab Stewart and Abe Ebia, who
still came out to put up sea level tape in the downpour with the wind blowing sideways!
FutureSeaLevel.org is a collaboration of Aquarium of the Bay
Foundation, the Sierra Club and the San Francisco Department of the
Environment (SF Environment). The aim of the program is to graphically
illustrate the effects of rising sea levels, as a way of inspiring Bay
Area residents to work together to find solutions.
