Surfrider SF Newsletter - February 2008

Dear Surfrider,

A short and sweet intro this month because as soon as I click "send" I'm escaping to Tahoe for a weekend of (hopefully) good snow and nice weather.

Two things immediately spring to mind that deserve being bubbled up to the very top:

#1: Our next meeting will be Wednesday March 12, 7pm at the Park Chalet. Everyone is invited, they usually last about an hour, and we drink some drinks and eat some snacks while we talk about our projects and events. Come out if you can make it!

#2: Wednesday, March 26 we are having a fundraiser at the Riptide bar in the Outer Sunset. More information below in the newsletter, but we'd love to see you all there to meet, drink, win prizes, and be happy.

So there it is, short as a Ft. Point right and sweet as candy from a stranger. I hope everyone's had a great month... get in touch if you have any updates for us or want to get involved, and hopefully we'll see you at an event or in the water soon!

  • Become a Styrobuster!

Please join Surfrider in getting the word out about a very important City Ordinance: Food Service and Waste Reduction Ordinance. The Ordinance came into effect in June of 2007, prohibiting restaurants and retail food vendors from using polystyrene foam products in their take-out food containers, and instead using more bio- and eco-friendly disposables. You can be trained in less than 30 minutes to visit a restaurant near you and educate the establishment about this ordinance. The City has some 4000 restaurants, of which only about half have been notified so far.

100,000 ocean mammals and sea turtles die each year from consumption of plastic debris, and this is one way you can help to fight the pollution of our natural areas. Please contact michellep@sf surfrider.org to learn how you can become a "Styrobuster".

    Oil Spill Questionnaire

If you volunteered or were at all involved in the oil spill cleanup last December, the San Francisco Department of Emergency Management want to hear from you. They've released a short questionnaire (in MS Word format) that you can fill out and return either by email or fax. SF DEM are looking for any and all feedback from the people "on the ground" about how the procedures worked (or didn't work) to hopefully continue improving their response system. If you were involved please take the time to download and complete this 1-page questionnaire. Due February 29, 2008.
