Surfrider Member,
New author, new chairman. San Francisco Surfrider
Chairman duties changed
hands last month. Adam Berke served as chair for a
great 2 years and I'm stoked to have been chosen to
carry on with this great organization. So let me
introduce myself: my name is Wes Womack. If you
have any questions, thoughts, or ideas, let me know!
At the next chapter meeting we will also be looking
for a new Secretary and a new Volunteer Coordinator.
See
position descriptions (page 7). These
descriptions are a rough outline of the duties of the
roles, but they are flexible to your strengths and
interests. Please contact me if you are interested in
either position.
Even if you're NOT interested in a formal position with
the San Fran chapter, summer is the time to get out to
one
of the many Surfrider-related events! This month is
packed with events all over the city, many of which are
featured here. So my first order of business as
Chairman? Give you every reason to get out and meet
other Surfrider members... happy
summer everyone, and I hope to meet all of you soon!
| Fire rings at Ocean Beach - Critical Juncture |
 |
|
Throughout 2006 and 2007, Surfrider have been
involved in a project at Ocean Beach that would allow
beach bonfires to continue, while minimizing the
negative impacts these fires have on the coastal
ecosystem. If you've ever been to a beach bonfire, you
can surely understand both the pleasure and the
responsibillity of this San Francisco tradition.
We are now several months into the trial-phase of a
project to install and maintain these fire rings at
Ocean Beach. We've had a lot of support from other
activist groups and volunteers to make sure these
firepits remain cleaned out and available for public
use. Now, however, we are at a point where we
need
more member involvement. We simply cannot
sustain
our current commitment to keeping them cleaned out
without your help. if you are interested in this, our most
important and high-profile project, and would be
willing to get more involved, please contact me.

| New Projects - Keep an Eye on These! |
 |
|
Aside from several other ongoing projects with
Surfrider, such as the Plant Don't Pave program and
the Ocean Beach Firerings Maintenance, several
issues have hit our radar recently thanks to members
and activists.
Tidal Power under the Golden Gate - What do you
think?
As a part of San Francisco's ambitious plan to reduce
our foreign oil dependance and thwart global
warming, a $150,000 research project has been
initiated to investigate the feasibilty of tidal (turbine)
power being harnessed under the Golden Gate
bridge. The jury is still out on the environmental
impacts of such a venture, and whether the funding
could be better spent on other clean energy projects.
We are asking you, the members, of your thoughts on
this matter. Shoot me an email at wesw@sfsurfride
r.org if you have insights into this project!
Who ever even thought about San Francisco's
sewer treatment policies?
You probably didn't until
you noticed Pacifica or OB closed for sewer overflow.
Even then, maybe you didn't know what to do about
it.
Well, now is the time to get involved and change the
future of this issue. The city is still in the process of
evaluating the different alternatives with regarding the
Southeast Treatment Plant. One option on the table is
to pump more sewage to the Westside plant for
Ocean disposal. I believe the chapter needs to be
particularly focused on this angle as it could possibly
increase the amount of sewer overflow into our
oceans. The best place to start with researching this
issue is at htt

| Yoga For Surfers - A Surfrider Benefit |
 |
|
Sun July 8th at Valencia, 1-3:30 pm
$40
Stretch and stabilize your shoulders, connect to your
core strength, and find fluid movement in this
workshop designed for surfers of all kinds. Whether
you're an veteran waverider, a wanna-be-surfer or
simply a web-surfer, this workshop will help you apply
yoga to the challenges riding waves on and off your
board and mat.
Together we will cultivate strength, ease and grace to
enhance all of our surfing adventures. All levels of
yoga and surfing experience (and injury!) are welcome.
A portion of the profits will benefit the SF chapter of the
Surfrider Foundation, who's goal is to protect our local
waves, water and beaches.
A water girl from birth, Britt Fohrman has spent the
past 7 years applying her yoga practice in the waves of
Costa Rica, Hawaii, Mexico and California. From her
first day on a board, she found that her yoga practice
created a foundation of strength, flexibility and
mindfulness that she could rely on to surf skillfully and
safely.
Britt has been a yoga teacher for 10 years and enjoys
weaving together what she learns from the ocean with
the wisdom of Iyengar,
Viniyoga, Restorative Yoga and Vipassana Meditation.
When she's not at the beach with her water dog, Britt
spends most of her time with pregnant women,
working as a Prenatal Yoga Teacher, Birth Doula,
Photographer, Bodyworker, and Childbirth Educator.
