Surfrider SF Newsletter - February 2009

Greetings Surfriders!

Our campaigns, our mantras, our efforts must always carry with them an element of flexibility: a resignation to the idea that what seems to be the optimal solution today can always be bettered tomorrow. If you're reading this, the question is not whether you care enough to act, as that seems to be a given. The greater question is whether you will adapt what you know about our ocean's challenges to today's information and join in solutions that were perhaps previously uncontemplated.

Your local Surfrider chapter is working hard to do just this. For 2009, we have several new programs within our chapter addressing current issues such as plastic reduction, oil spill prevention, offshore drilling, concrete removal in coastal communities, and local habitat protection. All this is underpinned by our ongoing beach cleanup efforts, a burgeoning education program, a huge events presence, and a redesigned website to enable it all. 2009 is going to be a big year!

So please make it a goal this year to get involved in these efforts. The volunteers that form the core of Surfrider's San Francisco chapter have risen to the challenge of finding solutions through today's information and ideas, and we need your help to make them a success!

    Wastewater Treatment Public Meeting

This meeting will be an important one!

For a long time, the SF Sewer Treatment Master Plan has not directly addressed the timeline for improvements in the wastwatere system that will help reduce sewerage overflows. This Thursday, however, overflow into our local beaches will be directly addressed in relation to the Master Plan renovation program.

If you are interested in knowing what our city is planning to do in the future towards decreasing sewage system/stormwater overflows, this meeting is for you. Please spread the word to anyone who might have an interest in this issue. It's open to the general public.

    CAC Wastewater Subcommittee Meeting
    Thursday, February 19, 2009
Location: SFPUC headquarters - 1155 Market Street, 4th Floor conference room
    Time: 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.

Congratulations Michael Stewart - Lobos Creek Habitat Restoration Award!

Congratulations to local activist (and SF Surfrider member) Michael Stewart on winning the Tom's of Maine Watershed Award. His work on restoring Lobos Creek in the Presidio has gained local and national attention and praise.

Want to help push this project over the finish line? Michael will be completing this project some time in the next month, one coming weekend day.

Email Michael to offer your help on this project.

Sign a Petition - fee on single-use plastic bags

Surfrider Foundation San Francisco Chapter endorses the move to impose a nominal fee on single-use plastic bags in SF. If you agree with this proposal, please take the time to (digitally) sign the online petition here:

Help SF Kick the Plastic Bag Habit >>

While this petition does not seek to answer where this money would go or how much the fee would be, this is a critical first step in garnering support for this proven way to cut down on plastic bag use.
