Surfrider SF Newsletter - May 2008

Dear Adam,

Summer's coming, which means we at Surfrider are getting ready for our busiest season! Don't forget about our TGR Movie night, screening "Out There" at Mezzanine, this Friday. Doors at 8pm. Movie at 9pm. Bands into the night. Special guest Shane Dorian.

We also have an important meeting coming up with the OB Vision Council to begin discussions around the future of Ocean Beach. A public meeting is planned for July, and we encourage everyone to attend who wants to have a say about the future of Ocean Beach.

Finally, we have two cleanups scheduled in June, the first two Sundays of the month. They're listed here to the right, but you can always check our website for locations and times of cleanups.

  • Teton Gravity Research (TGR) Surf Movie Night!

What: Surf Movie by Teton Gravity Research, "Out There", hosted by Surfrider San Francisco (charity event for our chapter!) Also featuring bands, raffles, and special guest Shane Dorian.

    Where: Mezzanine in San Francisco

When: Friday, May 30. Doors at 8pm.

Cost: $13 pre, $15 door. Tickets at ticketweb.

    48 State Parks Saved!

And now for some good news! Thanks to Californians' e-mails and contributions, Gov. Schwarzenegger REMOVED the proposal to close 48 state parks and 16 state beaches from his budget plan.

We at Surfrider are obviously relieved, and proud, to have been a part of the community who helped to stop this.

The Governor's office revieved over 31,000 of e-mails opposing the parks closures. While the parks are never safe and unfortunately this issue needs constant surveillance, we can all celebrate in the victory that the parks were not closed thanks to everyone's support.

Ocean Beach Vision Council - Questionnaire and public meeting

The newly-formed Ocean Beach Vision Council are still trying to figure out how to proceed, and early in the process is the perfect time for Surfrider to get in with our vision and ideas of how the planning and maintenance of Ocean Beach should proceed.

The first public meeting is tenatively scheduled for early July, so mark your calendars and stay tuned for more information! Our chapter will be there in force to ensure the council members know that we care about the future of Ocean Beach and want to see positive changes at our local beach!

The Beach Chalet Restaurant have put together a survey to inform the council of your priorities at Ocean Beach. Please take the time to fill out the survey from the Beach Chalet website. If you'd like to communicate directly to Surfrider about your priorities and thoughts for Ocean Beach, please email us at general@sfsurfrider.org.

    Webmaster wanted for chapter website

If you or someone you know is a web wiz and wants to volunteer a couple hours per week to a great cause, the San Francisco chapter website is in need of a webmaster. Experience in HTML and CSS required. Working knowledge of Dreamweaver or other website maintenance software also strongly preferred.

Please email wesw@sfsurfrider.org if you are interested.
